The Mise-en-scene Short Film Festival (MSFF), which will be having its 14th edition this year, has announced that director MIN Kyu-dong will act as the representative committee chair this year. MSFF is one of the most well known short film festivals in Korea, and it boasts the unique characteristic of categorizing programs by genres. MIN has a long history with MSFF as he grew with the festival in his early years, along with many other renowned Korean directors.
MIN’s most well known films include Memento Mori (1999, co-directed with KIM Tae-yong), All About My Wife (2012), and a linking segment in the omnibus Horror Stories II (2013). His most recent title, starring JU Ji-hoon and KIM Gang-woo, The Treacherous, is scheduled to open in domestic theaters on the 21st of this month, while it has already attracted some interest from international markets.
Working with MIN are the management committee members, festival committee members and honorary committee chair, director LEE Hyeon-seung. Among these groups, directors such as KIM Jee-woon, RYOO Seung-wan, KIM Tae-yong, BONG Joon-ho, PARK Chan-wook, HUR Jin-ho, NA Hong-jin, ROH Deok, YOON Jong-bin, and CHOI Dong-hoon have signed on to support the festival.
MSFF was originally founded by a group of young directors named ‘Director’s CUT’, hoping to support and promote young and talented Korean filmmakers and help them get exposure. As the festival focuses on genres, there is a section for each relative theme: A City of Sadness, A Short Film about Love, The King of Comedy, The Extreme Nightmare and The 40000 Blows. Many wait in anticipation about which new young new filmmaker might be discovered this year. The dates of the festival has not yet been determined.
