After majoring in theater, KIM made his acting debut early by appearing in such notable Korean films as KIM Ki-duk's <The Coast Guard> and KANG Woo-suk's <Silmido>, yet without achieving a great notoriety. His luck would change, however, with the film <Le Grand Chef>, a film adaptation of a comic book of the same title. In it, KIM portrayed a gifted chef named Seong-chan, whose diligence and talent in cooking over showy style reflected KIM's calm and poised image in real life. Despite its shortcomings, the film was a box-office success and enabled KIM to become a box-office star. He didn't immerse in the moment of success, however. After starring in a genre film <Marine Boy>, he appeared in <Hahaha>, a film by HONG Sangsoo, which was a complete departure from the style of his previous films. He played a sensitive and self-centered young poet and entered the realm of the 'HONG Sangsoo World' without difficulty. KIM's next feature <The Taste of Money> by IM Sang-soo was featured at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. As well as co-starring roles in the 2013 features <Mr. Go> and <Marriage Blue>, KIM was the lead in the features <The Gifted Hands> and then 2014’s <Tabloid Truth>. Never one to stick to the same genre, he switched gears again for his next feature, the 2014 social drama <Cart>. KIM stretched himself once again for his next role, by playing the infamous King Yeonsan during the Joseon Era in MIN Kyu-dong’s erotically charged period thriller <The Treacherous> in 2015.
