- Netflix Invests in Studio Space to Aid Growing Korean Slate

As it continues to expand its presence in Korea, global streamer Netflix has invested in studio space to help it bring its ever-growing local production slate to the screen. The move follows the company’s official establishment as a Korean corporate body last September.Netflix has leased nine sound stages at two studio facilities, both in Gyeonggi, the province surrounding Seoul. They will make use of three stages spanning 7,000 square meters at the Samsung Studio in Paju-si and another six over 9,000 square meters at YCDSMC Studio 139 in Yeoncheon-gun.“Netflix is thrilled to deepen its investment in Korea, as well as Korean Films and Series,” said Netflix VP Studio Operations Amy REINHARD. “With these new studios, Netflix is better positioned than ever to increase our production of great stories from Korea while also providing a wealth of production-related jobs for talented professionals in Korea’s creative community.”Since entering the Korean market in 2015, Netflix has reportedly invested KRW 770 billion (USD 700 million) into Korean content, across both acquisitions and directly producing originals that together include 80 programs. Major Netflix series to date have included Kingdom, Love Alarm, The School Nurse Files and the current hit Sweet Home. They also stream several top series from other local networks through deals with JTBC and Studio Dragon, including the current OCN hit The Uncanny Counter.Netflix debuted the comedy What Happened to Mr. Cha? on New Year’s Day and will usher in the Lunar New Year with the big-budget SF action drama SPACE SWEEPERS. Upcoming shows include Round Six from HWANG Dong-hyuk, the moon-set SF series The Silent Sea with GONG Yoo and BAE Doo-na, YEON Sang-ho’s Hellbound with YOO Ah-in, and a recently announced Korean version of the hit Spanish show Money Heist.
