  • THE DRUG KING with SONG Kang-ho Eyes Winter Bow
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jun 12, 2018
  • Follow-up from INSIDE MEN Director Steps Off Summer Release Plans

Originally expected to bow in local theaters in early August, Showbox’s period crime drama The Drug King, from Inside Men (2015) director WOO Min-ho and featuring A Taxi Driver (2017) star SONG Kang-ho, has had its release date delayed to the winter period.

Currently, in post-production, the film features SONG as the real-life LEE Doo-sam, a figure who rose up through the criminal underworld in 1970s Busan to build a drug smuggling empire. JO Jung-suk co-stars as a public prosecutor intent on taking him down while BAE Doo-na plays a local government lobbyist.

The late July and August period is generally considered the busiest box office season on the Korean calendar and competition this year is already heating up with big-budget tentpoles such as KIM Jee-woon’s Inrang, KIM Yong-hwa’s Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days and YOON Jong-bin’s The Spy Gone North already confirmed, alongside Hollywood blockbuster Mission: Impossible - Fallout. More films are expected to be announced shortly.

Distributor Showbox’s recent hits have included A Taxi Driver, MEMOIR OF A MURDERER (2017) and The Swindlers (2017). Their two titles released this year found footage horror GONJIAM: Haunted Asylum and period action-comedy sequel Detective K: Secret of the Living Dead, are currently the third and fifth top local films of 2018.
