Hong Sangsoo’s ON THE BEACH AT NIGHT ALONE Awarded in Spain

KIM Min-hee has picked up the AISGE Award for Best Actress from the 55th Gijón International Film Festival in Northern Spain for her part in Hong Sangsoo’s On the Beach at Night Alone. The win is KIM’s second for the role, after she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.

On the Beach at Night Alone features KIM as an actress who escapes the public eye by traveling to Germany, where she waits to meet her lover. Later, she returns to Korea, visiting the seaside town of Gangneung following the end of her affair.

Getting her start in E J-yong’s Asako in Ruby Shoes (2000), KIM has gone on to appear in notable works such as Helpless (2012), Very Ordinary Couple (2013) and PARK Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden last year, which netted her the Best Actress accolade from the Blue Dragon Film Awards.

After first appearing in Hong’s Right Now, Wrong Then (2015), which earned her the Best Actress prize from the Busan Film Critics Association Awards, KIM has now collaborated with director Hong five times. Three of those projects came this year, with The Day After and Claire’s Camera bowing at the Cannes Film Festival after On the Beach at Night Alone, while their fifth collaboration recently finished production.

Hong was previously the subject of a retrospective in Gijón in 2013 and his film Right Now, Wrong Then earned both the Best Film and Best Actor (for JUNG Jae-young) prizes there two years ago.
