KIM has been a part of Korean dramas that made big hits overseas. She played a mother character for Eunsu in <Autumn’s Tale> and other leading roles in <Romance and Country Princess>. It was overseas media that lifted her from the behind the scenes. When Korean pop-culture reached the height of its popularity overseas, she was flooded with interview requests for her character as a mother and emerged from obscurity to make stage appearances. She expanded her acting range through movies. She made a strong impression portraying a frustrated, broken-hearted mother in <My Brother> due to personality clashes between her two sons ([WON Bin] and [SHIN Ha-kyun]) and a middle-aged woman who was not a wholesome mother but a neglectful mother falling into a bittersweet love affair with her daughter’s fiancé in <Viva! Love>. Later, she played a strong character as a mother-in-law in <Thirst> and returned to her usual motherly character in <A Long Visit> and pulled off a very moving performance. Following a supporting role as a burglar who teams up with Simon YAM in blockbuster hit <The Thieves>, KIM took on a larger role in the 2013 drama <Tough as Iron>, while also playing a significant role in the LEE Joon-ik’s drama <Hope> that same year. KIM’s next three projects were all high profile period films. She first reteamed with <The Thieves> director CHOI Dong-hoon for Colonial Era action-thriler <Assassination>, then LEE Joon-ik’s Joseon era drama <The Throne> and then PARK Chan-wook’s Colonial Era thriller <The Handmaiden>, which competed at the Cannes Film Festival.
