  • INTIMATE STRANGERS Opens Its Secrets to the Masses
  • by Pierce Conran /  Nov 06, 2018
  • BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Rocks in 2nd Place Debut

A popular new local title boosted admissions 40% over the last week, as 2.24 million tickets were sold over the weekend. As is usual for the season, domestic entries remained strong, accounting for 63% of all sales.

Debuting in pole position was Intimate Strangers, Lotte Entertainment’s remake of the Italian high-concept comedy-drama Perfect Strangers. The well-received title drummed 1.17 million sales (USD 9.3 million) over the weekend, with 1.66 million admissions (USD 12.39 million) recorded in total over its first five days.

Over the same period, Freddy Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody opened in second place with 523,000 viewers (USD 4.39 million), accumulating 709,000 entries (USD 5.64 million) since bowing on Wednesday.

Last week’s top draw, the period action-horror Rampant, crashed almost 80% as it took in a scant 175,000 spectators (USD 1.36 million) in its sophomore frame, giving the pricey title a disappointing 1.52 million admissions (USD 11.29 million) in 11 days.

US fantasy The House with a Clock in Its Walls opened in fourth place with 111,000 entries (USD 832,000), giving the Eli ROTH film 169,000 sales (USD 1.16 million) in five days. Opening with a poor 45,000 tickets (USD 378,000) was Blumhouse’s Halloween remake, which has brought in just 90,000 viewers (USD 658,000) since opening on Halloween day.

While Intimate Strangers and Bohemian Rhapsody look set to add significantly to their totals, the local thriller The Villagers and the homegrown period horror The Wrath are also scheduled to jump into the fray this week.
