The local movie King and the Clown is expected to attract more than 10 million viewers, with the milestone passed on February 11. Only two other Korean movies have been that successful at the box-office, Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War and Silmido.
If King and the Clown reaches 10 million on February 11, it will have taken the movie 45 days to reach this level. Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War needed less time, only 39 days, while Silmido reached 10 million viewers after 58 days.
The success of King and the Clown is remarkable when compared to the other '10 million viewer movies' Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War and Silmido. Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War and Silmido were both movies with a big budget, star actors and a big-name director.
King and the Clownlacks all these ingredients, but still is soon to become one of the Korean movies to attract more than 10 million viewers, leaving many popular big budget movies behind.
The movie is based on a successful play with the same theme. The director and actors may be unknown, but the film is regarded as a well-made movie with great acting.
Starting off as a small release when it was premiered, King and the Clownreceived good reviews and positive word-of-mouth that lead to increased screenings and the success it is enjoying now.
