Period Films Sold to North America, France and Asia
Directed by hitmaker
CHOI Dong-hoon,
Assassination, a colonial era tale of espionage set in Seoul and Shanghai, sold its North American rights to Well Go USA, while it was also picked up across Asia, selling to Bona Film Distribution (China), Edko Films (Hong Kong), Moviecloud (Taiwan), Dream Movies (Singapore/Malaysia), PT. Prima Cinema Multimedia (Indonesia), Coral Culture Content (Thailand) and Viva Communications (The Philippines). Notably, the picture secured these sales based on the strength of a poster, which was revealed at the Hong Kong FilMart, and the bankability of its director and stars (including
Gianna JUN, HA Jung-woo and
LEE Jung-jae).
The Joseon Era tale of the tyrannical King Yeonsan,
The Treacherous is the new film by
MIN Kyu-dong and was sold to Pretty Pictures, an indie distributor in France that also acquired the film’s Swiss pay-TV rights. Another Finecut-repped period film,
LEE Won-suk’s
The Royal Tailor, was also sold to Sinema TV (Turkey), Coral Culture Contents (Thailand) and Viva Entertainment (The Philippines). Finecut will be quite busy at Cannes this year, as they represent the Un Certain Regard title
Madonna, by
SHIN Su-won, and are also presenting rough cuts of
KIM Ki-duk’s
Stop and
YEON Sang-ho’s
Seoul Station to buyers in the market.
Assassination will hit theaters in the peak late July period while The Treacherous will debut domestically on May 21st.
