Wider Release than ROARING CURRENTS
Ode to My Father is running in the fast lane. After hitting a million admissions in just four days, the film has confirmed its North American release date. Starting on Christmas day in the LA CGV, the film will expand to New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Boston, Seattle and a few more major US and Canadian cities starting January 9th. In all, the film will play across 40 screens, exceeding the 30 reached by
Roaring Currents. The size of the North American release is relatively big despite the fact that its domestic performance is only in its early stages.
CJ Entertainment, who is distributing the film, commented, “The theme is family, which anyone can relate to. Its subject can make audiences laugh and cry, especially those who’ve had a hard time adjusting to a new place.” Before the announcement of its North American release, Ode to My Father was invited to the 65th Berlin International Film Festival’s Panorama section in February of next year.
Ode to My Father follows Deok-su (
HWANG Jung-min) who lived through milestones of contemporary Korean history, and fought through the hard times to support his family. To realistically portray Germany’s coal mines in the 1960s and the Vietnam War in the 1970s, the crew travelled to the Czech Republic and Thailand while securing actual equipment and cars from those time periods.
Ode to My Father, which was released on the 17th, drew over 1.1 million admissions last weekend and took the number one spot at the box office. On its release day alone, 184,972 tickets were sold, placing it above the records of well-performing blockbusters
Miracle in Cell No.7 and
The Attorney. Many are curious to find out if
Ode to My Father will become the first 10 million admissions blockbuster of 2015.
