KIM’s 3rd Invitation in a Row Following PIETA and MOEBIUS
Korean auteur KIM Ki-duk’s 20th feature film, One on One will be opening the 11th Venice Days on August 27th. International sales company Finecut confirmed the invitation on the 31st of last month.
Venice Days, the sidebar which runs separately within the Venice Film Festival started in 2004 and can be considered as the Italian version of the Directors’ Fortnight section in Cannes. “The Venice Days section invites 12 features each year, of which feature strong European auteur films. One on One can be seen as a breakthrough by being selected this year,” said Finecut. The only official award within Venice Days is Europa Cinemas Label, which is focused on the European produced or co-produced works. However, the section is eligible for the most prestigious award at Venice, Lion of the Future – Luigi De Laurentiis Award, which has been given out 4 times to works from that section.
KIM was presented with the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival for Pieta (2012) and was invited for non-competition section for Moebius last year. This is his third year in a row at Venice with his newest One on One. The story wraps around the showdown between seven suspects and seven shadows after a teenage girl has been murdered. Touching on the hypocritical and contradictory nature of humans, the film leads the audiences to ask, ‘who am I?’
