Studio Back New Films by Fresh Talent

The Butterfly Project, an initiative by Korean studio CJ E&M which invites young filmmakers to submit their scripts for a chance to be made, announced two winners for its 2013 contest on Monday. This year’s lucky contestants were JO Seul-ye, for the project Young A’s Silence, and CHOI Jeong-yeol, with Glory Day.

Young-A’s Silence, in a plot reminiscent of Lotte’s hit 2012 thriller Neighbors, takes place in a residential building where all the inhabitants become suspects in a child’s murder. Meanwhile Glory Day focuses on four 19-year olds as an event changes their lives on the cusp of adulthood.

The nascent filmmakers, who were picked out of 11 candidates (whittled down from 79 submissions), will receive script development support from CJ Entertainment and could also be granted backing to the tune of KRW 300 million (USD 290,000) to realize their projects.

The project dates back to 2010 when it was launched in conjunction with the Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival (CINDI). When the festival closed its doors in 2012, the Butterfly Project continued as an independent competition. Among previous winners was CHOI Jin-sung’s Steel Cold Winter, which premiered in the New Currents section of last October’s 18th Busan International Film Festival.
