LEE Joon-ik’s latest feature Hope has been chosen as the opening film for this year’s Korean Film Festival in Paris (Festival du Film Coréen à Paris, FFCP). The 8th edition of the festival, which will be held from October 29th to November 5th, will be presented by the Association 1886 and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and the Korean Film Archive (KOFA). It is scheduled to showcase 30 feature and short films spanning classic, genre, documentary and animation film.

 

In addition, Hope was sold to five Asian territories during this year’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). The financier and distributor of the film, Lotte Shopping Lotte Entertainment Co., Ltd, stated that “Hope was sold during the 18th BIFF Asian Market to a total of five Asian territories including Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Hong Kong-based major financing and distribution company EDKO is said to have commented on the film as “a warm and considerate account of a highly controversial subject matter.”

 

Lotte Entertainment added that Hope is currently in talks with the US, Taiwan and Vietnam for possible theatrical release. Hope tells the story of a family who embraces and attempts heals a child’s trauma following a sexual attack. Starring SEOL Kyung-gu and UHM Ji-won, Hope was released on October 2nd and attracted one million admissions in its first week in theaters. LEE Joon-ik, who made the 10-million admissions hit The King and the Clown (2005), made a successful comeback with Hope after a two-and-a-half-year break since Battlefield Heroes (2010).
