Webtoon Hit at 6.7 Million Admissions and Counting
 

The early summer hit Secretly Greatly is set to mirror its Korean success overseas as July will see it released in multiple territories across Asia and North America. Meanwhile, the film is still on release in Korea, having accrued over 6.7 million admissions to date.

 

Directed by JANG Cheol-soo, who debuted in 2010 with Bedevilled, and starring young stars KIM Soo-hyun, PARK Ki-woong and LEE Hyun-woo, Secretly Greatly will have its international bow as the centerpiece presentation of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) next Thursday, July 11th. Following its festival date it will open in New York and Los Angeles on July 19th before rolling out to 10-15 US cities throughout the summer. The Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal will also screen the film in mid-July ahead of its July 26th Canadian release date.

 

In Asia, the film will first screen in Singapore starting July 18th before opening in Taiwan on July 26th. The film will also expand across the region during the season with expected runs in Japan, Indonesia and Hong Kong, where star KIM is set to make an appearance for the local premiere in late July. Deals are also being brokered with China and Thailand for the near future.

 

The webtoon hit scored multiple box office records upon its release as it set new benchmarks for opening day and opening weekend for Korean films. It has since held strong against the deluge of Hollywood tentpoles and is now poised to come close to the seven million ticket mark. It is currently the third highest grossing film of the year, following the prison melodrama Miracle in Cell No. 7 (12.8 million admissions) and the spy thriller The Berlin File (7.16 million admissions).

 

Secretly Greatly will also take part in the Puchon Choice competition section of this year’s Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), which gets underway July 18th.
