ROH Deok Triumphs with Debut at SIFF
The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) just wrapped up its 16th edition and among the winners was the debut Korean romantic feature Very Ordinary Couple from director ROH Deok. The hit film, which accrued almost two million admissions in Korea earlier this year, was awarded the Best Feature accolade in the Asian New Talent competition.
The jury felt that the film was “a subtle, sensitive and truthful portrayal of life and people. It is well-made with confidence and professional directing skills. Through the very special eyes of the filmmaker we as the audience gradually walk into the story and are amazed by the subtle beauty that we have ignored in daily life.”
Very Ordinary Couple follows a couple who break off their covert office relationship only for their colleagues to discover their secret history as they can’t contain emotions.
ROH, a graduate of the Seoul Institute of the Arts, was surprised by her film’s win: “It took us a long time to finish this film. Winning this award is unexpected.” She went on “Very Ordinary Couple was a film about love. For my next project I may try something different.”
