O Muel’s Film Victorious in World Cinema Dramatic Competition

O Muel’s
Jiseul has been awarded the Grand Jury Prize, the top of award in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition. This news caps off what has been a very successful week for Korean filmmakers at Sundance, following the well-received premiere of
Stoker,
PARK Chan-wook’s Hollywood debut.
Jiseul, an artistic account of the infamous Jeju Massacre of 1948 that is believed to have claimed the lives of at least 15,000 people, premiered last October at the 17th
Busan International Film Festival. The film was a resounding success following its Korean premiere screenings and eventually walked away with four awards, making it Busan’s top performing film in 2012.
O Muel’s work is the latest in a series of Korean films to receive major festival attention.
KIM Ki-duk’s
Pieta picked the Golden Lion at last year’s Venice International Film Festival and Best Director at the Dubai International Film Festival while
JEON Kyu-hwan’s
The Weight took home Best Director prizes from both the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and the India International Film Festivals in the past few months. Among other,
Juvenile Offender,
Azooma,
Sleepless Night and
Barbie have also recently been awarded on the circuit.
With a busy festival calendar lined up for the coming months, Jiseul will only add to its rapidly growing profile as one of the more successful Korean film of the last few years on the international scene. It is currently screening at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and will also take part in the main competition for the Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema in early February.
