The Thieves, which has landed as the second biggest box office hit in Korean history, is being invited to Canadian, American and Spanish film festivals, raising the profile of the Korean film worldwide. Having already been invited to the Comtemporary World Cinema section of the Toronto International Film Festival, it is also set to be screened in the Open Cinema section of the 17th
Busan International Film Festival. It has also been invited to the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival, the Philadelphia International Film Festival and Hawaii International Film Festival.
The Sitges Fantastic Film Festival has chosen The Thieves as the closing film for its Casa Section, which is a competition section that highlights the bright future of Asian films. As Sitges attracts fans of genre film, the audience should go wild after seeing the breathtaking action sequences of the caper film.
A programmer at the Hawaii International Film Festival predicted that the audience would not be able to resist falling for the film given its overwhelming scale, strong narrative and visual spectacles, adding that the characters in the film combined to make a strong ensemble cast. The programmer concluded by saying that this was one of the reasons the festival chose the film and there are expectations that it will appeal to many overseas audiences.
