  • Theater chain CGV opens first IMAX screens
  • Dec 14, 2005
  • Leading exhibition chain CGV opened its first IMAX screens in its CGV Yongsan and CGV Incheon venues on December 1. The screens, developed by the Canadian company IMAX, will offer both specially enhanced 2D films as well as selected 3D educational or mainstream films. The first film presented on the screens was a 2D enhanced version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. By 2007, CGV plans to open IMAX screens in its existing venues in Ilsan, Wangshimni, Daegu, and Gwangju. CGV has reached an agreement with IMAX to be the exclusive operator of the screens in Korea. CGV also announced that the IMAX screens would operate in accordance with Korea's Screen Quota System. The 106-146 days per year during which the screens will be obligated to screen local films will be fulfilled by screening enhanced versions of large-scale local films. The first and only IMAX screen that operated in Korea before the recent openings was a venue in Building 63 in Yeouido, Seoul. Whereas that screen focused exclusively on educational documentaries, the new screens represent the first time that mainstream commercial films will be screened in Korea in the IMAX format.
