  • IM Sang-soo to judge Locarno’s International Competition
  • Jul 04, 2012
  • Director IM Sang-soo (<A Good Lawyer’s Wife>, <The Housemaid>) will sit on the jury for the 2012 Locarno International Film Festival’s (LIFF) Concorso Internazionale (International Competition). He will be joined by American producer/director Roger AVARY (<The Laws of Attraction>), French screenwriter/actress Noémie LVOVSKY (<Camille redouble>) and Swiss curator/writer Hans Ulrich OBRIST. Serving as the jury’s president, Thai filmmaker Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL (<Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives>) rounds out the five-person panel.

The jury will be responsible for handing out five of the festival’s most prestigious awards. The Pardo d’oro (Golden Leopard) is awarded to the competition’s overall best film, a Special Jury Prize is given to the second best film, and a Leopard award is also given in the categories of Best Direction,  Best Actress, and Best Actor.

Aside from the inclusion of IM and WEERASETHAKUL on the International Competition panel, the Asian film industry was well represented across other juries. Malaysia’s HO Yuhang (<At the End of Daybreak>) will help judge the Concorso Cineasti del presente (Filmmakers of the Present Competition) and Japanese film programmer Abi SAKAMOTO will select the festival’s Best First Film alongside two others.

In its 65th year, LIFF is the tied with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival as the world’s third oldest film fest, both behind Cannes and Venice. The festival will unveil its 2012 program on July 11.
