- Poetry wins again at Fribourg

LEE Chang-dong seems to rise in profile with every film he makes and has continued to do so with <Poetry> (2010) which has won yet another international award. The film, fresh from winning best director and best screenplay awards at the Asian Film Awards, picked up the grand prize, the Regard d’Or at the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland.Director Lee had already received a tribute from the festival in 2008. In addition, <Poetry> was also awarded The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Jury Award at Fribourg.Like most of Director LEE’s films, <Poetry> is a social realist tale that focuses on an elderly woman who finds solace in writing poetry as she copes with the onset of Alzheimer’s and a wayward grandson. The film initially premiered at Cannes where it won the Best Screenplay award, then took home four trophies at Korea’s Grand Bell Awards, screened at Toronto and was released in a number of international territories.Another Korean film, <Late Autumn>, a remake of LEE Man-hee’s 1966 classic directed by KIM Tae-yong also won at the event. The film picked up the E-Changer Award selected by a youth jury. The Chinese and Korean co production which starred Korea’s Hyun Bin and Chinese actor Tang Wei, also competed in the competition section against <Poetry>.The Fribourg International Film Festival is an annual film festival held in the historical town of Fribourg that serves as the cultural border between German and French Switzerland. The festival is in its 26th year and focuses on cultural films from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The festival kicked off March the 19th and finished a week later on the 26th.
