Latest HONG Sang-soo, KIM Min-hee Team-up Continues Festival Run

The Woman Who Ran, the 24th film from HONG Sang-soo, has netted the director the Best Screenplay prize at the recently concluded Bucharest International Film Festival.

HONG’s film received the prize during the closing ceremony of the festival’s 16th edition, which took place in the Romanian capital on the evening of September 2. The jury awarded HONG the Best Screenplay Award for “the subtlety with which he doses infinitesimal quantities in the construction of the graceful profile of the feminine universe.”

Working with HONG for the seventh time, KIM Min-hee plays a woman who visits several of her friends in Seoul while her husband is away on a business trip. She visits them at their homes, and bumps into another at a theater. The film co-stars SEO Young-hwa, KIM Sae-byuk, SONG Sun-mi and KWON Hae-hyo, all frequent HONG collaborators.

The award-winning film debuted back in February at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it earned HONG the Silver Bear for Best Director. He is only the second Korean filmmaker to pick up the prize, following KIM Ki-duk’s win for Samaritan Girl in 2004.

HONG’s work went on the screen at the Taipei Film Festival and is also invited to the New York Film Festival’s main slate, as well as the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
