  • Festival-Screened Korean Animation Scores Overseas Sales

After screening at several major film festivals around the world, CHO Kyung-hun’s dark animation Beauty Water has been picked up for distribution, with theatrical releases in four overseas territories confirmed for September.

Beauty Water is scheduled to open in Australia and New Zealand on September 17, with Taiwan following the next day. It is also scheduled to be released in Singapore in the middle of September. Meanwhile, the film will go on commercial release in Korea, starting September 2. The film’s production company SS Animent noted that it is an extremely rare case for a Korean animation film to be simultaneously released in foreign territories.

This debut feature work from Director CHO, which tells the story of a young woman struggling with issues of self-esteem who discovers a dangerous ‘Beauty Water’ product that is able to drastically change her appearance and quickly elevate her standing in society, debuted in the Contrechamp Competition section of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival this year. The film went on to compete in the Korean Fantastic Features section of this year’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan) and was also invited to the Fantasia International Film Festival, which is currently taking place.

Based on an episode of the Korean anthology webtoon ‘Tales of the Unusual’, Beauty Water darkly satirizes the popularity of plastic surgery as well as beauty products in modern-day Korea.
