  • Hit Korean Comedy Takes Home Prize at Far East Film Festival

After becoming the second most successful film of all time in the Korean market earlier this year, Extreme Job ushered in more good tidings after picking up an award on the film festival circuit. The hit comedy earned the Bronze Audience Award at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy earlier this month.

The fourth film by Twenty (2015) director LEE Byoung-heonExtreme Job stars RYU Seung-ryong as the leader of a detective squad that goes undercover as the staff of a chicken-and-beer restaurant that experiences a sudden explosion of popularity which begins to interfere with their investigation. The film dominated the Lunar New Year holiday season, ultimately welcoming a staggering 16.26 million viewers (USD 117.44 million) to theaters, second only to Roaring Currents (2014) on the all-time box office charts. News recently broke that a US remake to be produced by Kevin HART is also in the works.

This year’s FEFF screened a broad array of Korean projects, including the opening film Birthday by LEE Jong-un and a special retrospective curated by Korean film critic Darcy PAQUET entitled “100 Years of Korean Cinema: “I Choose Evil” – Lawbreakers Under the Military Dictatorship.” Birthday star JEON Do-yeon was also conferred the Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Extreme Job earned an average 4.30 rating from viewers in Udine, ranking only behind Oliver CHEN’s Still Human from Hong Kong and the Chinese film Dying to Survive by WEN Mu Ye. This year’s 21 edition of FEFF ran from April 26 to May 4.
