  • THE VILLAINESS Headed for the Small Screen
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 24, 2019
  • Skybound to Produce TV Adaptation of Action-Packed Cannes Midnighter

JUNG Byung-gil’s Cannes-invited action-thriller The Villainess (2017) will be adapted for the small screen in the United States. The film’s distributor Contents Panda revealed that they have signed a deal with Skybound Entertainment to produce a series based on the property.

The Villainess (2017) initially debuted in the Midnight Screenings section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 and went on to screen around the world. KIM Ok-vin (Thirst, 2009) leads the film’s cast as a highly trained assassin who embarks on a brutal vendetta.

The film is the third by director JUNG, who previously made the documentary Action Boys (2008) and the serial killer thriller Confession of Murder (2012). The action filmmaker is currently preparing to direct Gerard BUTLER in the US action-thriller Afterburn.

JUNG Byung-gil has quickly established himself as one of the world’s great action directors, and we’re incredibly excited to be working with him to expand the world of The Villainess (2017) into a thrilling international series,” said Bryan and Sean FURST of Skybound in a joint statement.

“We expect that The Villainess (2017), which made a successful debut in Cannes Film Festival, will bring special entertainment and fun to the audience with its rich stories of the genre, and through the partnership with Skybound Entertainment, already well-known for The Walking Dead,” related KIM Jae-min of Contents Panda.

Director JUNG is on board to direct the pilot episode of the series while Skybound and Contents Panda are now working together to find a writer for the show. The Villainess (2017) follows BONG Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer (2013), another Korean film that was optioned for an American TV remake. The Snowpiercer series is expected to debut on the TNT cable network at some point this year.
