  • BURNING Lights Up American Awards Circuit
  • by Pierce Conran /  Dec 17, 2018
  • LEE Chang-dong and Steven YEUN Awarded by LA and Toronto Critics

LEE Chang-dong’s critically acclaimed arthouse film BURNING has begun to heat up the North American end-of-year awards circuit after claiming several prizes from prominent critics groups. Film critics from Los Angeles and Toronto awarded the film both in their Best Foreign Language Film and Best Supporting Actor (for Steven YEUN) categories.

In addition to YEUN’s supporting acting prize and a tie with KOREEDA Hirokazu’s Shoplifters in the foreign language category, BURNING was also given the runner-up prize in the Best Feature category at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, just behind awards race frontrunner Roma by Alfonso CUARON.

In addition to its prizes and nominations, also from several yet-to-be-decided awards groups, LEE’s film has also been featuring heavily on end-of-year top 10 lists. Among many others, Manohla DARGIS of the New York Times gave it her number two slot, while influential French magazine Cahiers du Cinema selected it as their fourth favorite of the year.

BURNING has been drawing broad international acclaim since its debut in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It is currently in theaters in North America, having been released there by Well Go USA on October 26, with close to half a million dollars in sales to date.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on BURNING on December 17, the day that the Academy Awards will reveal the shortlist for next year’s Best Foreign Language film award. If selected, it would be the first time for a Korean film to make the shortlist. The final list of five contenders in the category will be revealed along with other nominations towards the end of January.
