  • CJ E&M Winds Up 25-Strong Turkish Production Slate
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jun 27, 2018
  • Korean Studio Partners with BKM and TAFF for Local Sequels and Remakes

Korea’s top film purveyor CJ E&M is stepping up its production, pipeline in Turkey, after revealing that it is set to finance and distribute 25 titles. They will embark on the projects with the local production companies BKM and TAFF, which count six of last year’s top ten local hits among their 2017 lineups.

CJ will kick off its round of local-language Turkish titles with BKM’s Yol Arkadasim 2. The sequel will be released in October. December will then see the release of TAFF’s Dance With the Jackals 5. CJ will then enter the new year with Magic Carpet Ride 2 from director Yilmaz ERDOGAN, a sequel to the highest grossing local film of 2005.

Trade magazine Variety writes that CJ E&M’s director of international business GO Kyung-bum stated: “Our strategy is to aim at success both in and out of Turkey by distributing strong films produced by the two very qualified companies.” He went on to relate that “We will not only make profits but also understand the market better and build stronger human networks, as we finance and distribute more films [in Turkey].”

In addition to continuing local franchises, CJ is also planning to create Turkish versions of some of their existing Korean box office hits. According to GO, “We are planning to expand our business in Turkey by remaking hit Korean IP in other countries — as we have done with Miss Granny (2014).” Remakes in the works include Miss Granny as well as the action drama Confidential Assignment (2017) and the espionage action-comedy The Spy: Undercover Operation (2013).

CJ E&M’s sister company CJ CGV became the largest exhibitor in the Turkish market after acquiring Mars Entertainment in 2016 and with the establishment of CJ Entertainment Turkey in 2017, the company has to date distributed seven titles in the market.
