Political drama 1987: When the Day Comes (2017) received four awards at the 54th BaekSang Arts Awards. At the awards ceremony held at the COEX Hall D in Seoul, 1987: When the Day Comes swept 4 prizes including the Grand Prize, Best Film Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay. “I want to thank the judges and President MOON Jae-in”, said LEE Woo-jung, producer of the film and CEO of Woojung Films. “I also would like to thank all the activists who fought for democracy in Korea. I hope this will be a small consolation for their sacrifice.” Director JANG Joon-hwan added, “This prize makes me emotional. […] This is a very beautiful story made by the Korean people 30 years ago. Recently, they made another beautiful story while holding candles. I’d like to share this honor with you people.” 

“1987: When the Day Comes took all filmmakers by surprise when it was released”, said film director CHOI Dong-hoon, president of the jury this year. “I can’t help but applaud the high production value, the actors’ performance and the authenticity with which the subject has been treated. […] I was happy to watch this film last winter.” In addition, KIM Yun-seok and PARK Hee-soon, winners of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively for this movie, said: “These acting awards are for all the actors and actresses of 1987: When the Day Comes.” This political drama chronicles the real-life story of the torture and death of student protestor PARK Jong-chul that led to the June Democracy Movement of 1987. It conveys the message that “everyone is a hero”.
