  • Korean Animation Exports Make Over 100 Million Dollars
  • by SONG Soon-jin /  Nov 30, 2017
  • North America Accounts for 31% of Exports

International exports of Korean animation performed better compared to last year. “Despite China’s cultural blockade, Korean animation enterprises have shown a remarkable growth in exports,” the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) announced. According to KOCCA, progress reports have revealed that Korean animation companies that participated in major international content markets saw exports rise by more than 30% to 100 million dollars.

KOCCA managed the Korean booth at USA’s Kidscreen Summit in February, France’s MIPTV in April, and France’s MIPCOM in October, in addition to other international markets. The booth supported approximately 50 Korean animation enterprises, including companies such as CONIX, TUBAn and Funny Flux in the global market. KOCCA’s animation character industry team attended the three markets mentioned and analyzed the deals made by the participating companies. They found that North American countries signed for 31% of the deals, making up the biggest part of business. For distribution platforms, broadcasters made 42% of the deals, while Netflix and new media platforms took 26%. The analysis revealed that there were over 300 deals with 50 different countries for licenses and co-production projects. Notable deals include the consultation of five seasons of Dinowar T-REX along with its international distribution and MOU between NHC Media and CraneKahn, as well as PNIsystem’s Little Farmer Ravi and its American distribution deal with Janson Media.

“We’ll use our LA Business Center and our marketer residing in Brazil to expand our global relationships with America,” KOCCA stated “and we also plan to support participants of Brazil’s Rio Content Market next year.”
