CITY OF GHOST to Open 2017 Edition Amid Climate Change Concerns

The Green Film Festival in Seoul is returning for its 14th edition, which will get underway on May 18th at Samsung Hall and ARTHOUSE MOMO at Ewha Women’s University. The festival has put forward a program that will include 55 films, among them 15 short films, hailing from 40 countries around the world.

GFFIS returns at a time when many citizens are concerned about the growing levels of fine dust in the country and problems stemming from global warming. The event’s themes for 2017 are climate change, post-nuclear life and sustainable living.

The festival will kick off with a screening of the documentary City of Ghosts. Directed by Matthew Heineman, the film follows a group of anonymous activists who come together after losing their homeland to ISIS insurgents in 2014.

This year’s Green Competition, which will hand out a prize worth USD 10,000, has invited eight works from six countries, which were whittled down from over 1,500 submitted films. In addition to sections on ‘Climate Change’, ‘Post-Nuclear’ and ‘Focus - For a New Environmental Movement’, the festival will put on a program on documentarian Jerry Rothwell.

The festival has set actors JEON Seok-ho of TV’s Misaeng and SHIN Hyun-been of He’s on Duty (2010) as the honorary ambassadors of this year’s edition. The 14th Green Film Festival in Seoul will conclude on May 24th.
