  • Netflix Plans Theatrical Bows for BONG Joon-ho’s OKJA
  • by Pierce Conran /  Mar 09, 2017
  • Creature Feature Will be Released in US and Korea

BONG Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer (2013) follow-up, the high-concept sci-fi Okja, will be getting a theatrical release, as confirmed by its investor Netlfix, thus ending months of speculation as to whether or not the online giant would release the title exclusively on its streaming platform.

For its Korean release, Netlfix has partnered once again with Next Entertainment World, after purchasing their titles Pandora and Lucid Dream for global distribution in the last few months. Details have not been revealed for the US theatrical plan, save that there will be a limited day-and-date release. A teaser for the project was viewed over a million times since its release at the end of February.

With a budget over USD 50 million, Okja boasts an international cast featuring Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano, as well as Korean stars such as BYUN Hee-bong, YOON Je-moon, CHOI Woo-shik. Newcomer AHN Seo-hyun plays a girl who does everything in her power to prevent a global conglomerate from kidnapping her friend, a beast name Okja.

Subsequent Korean Netlfix projects include a pair of TV shows, the webcomic adaptation Love Alarm and the period zombie action-thriller Kingdom from Tunnel director KIM Seong-hun.

Netflix will release Okja across the 190 markets where it services on June 28th. The film is produced by Plan B Entertainment and Lewis Pictures.
