  • by June Kim /  Dec 18, 2014
  • A HARD DAY and HAN GONG-JU Among Winners
On December 17th, the 35th Blue Dragon Awards were held at the Seoul Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. Hosted by actors YU Jun-sang (The Target) and KIM Hye-soo (The Thieves [2012]), the awards recognized talents in 18 filmmaking categories. The Attorney, which was already stirring up a lot of talk prior to the awards due to its multiple nominations, ended up converting four of its eleven nominations.
Strong titles competed for the Best Film Award. Cannes official invitee A Hard Day went up against local record breaker Roaring Currents, the heavily nominated The Attorney, as well as the musical hit Miss Granny and the social drama Whistle Blower. In the end, YANG Woo-suk’s The Attorney took home the trophy. In addition, The Attorney also took the Best Actor Award for SONG Kang-ho, Best Supporting Actress for KIM Young-ae and the Popular Star Award for IM Si-wan.
In the Best Director category, the same titles were nominated, except for The Attorney which was replaced by The Pirates. Director KIM Han-min of Roaring Currents took home the honor.
The Best Actress award went to rising star CHUN Woo-hee who played a very challenging character in Han Gong-ju. She put up a good fight against veteran actresses such as JEON Do-yeon and Kim Hee-ae.
A familiar face, CHO Jin-woong received the Best Supporting Actor prize for his role in A Hard Day. He has been in many projects lately, and will appear in few big upcoming titles such as HA Jung-woo’s Chronicle of a Blood Merchant and PARK Chan-wook’s Fingersmith.
It’s no surprise that PARK Yoo-chun was awarded the New Actor Award as he has already been recognized by The Korean Association of Film Critics, the Grand Bell Awards and the Busan Film Critics’ Awards for his role in Haemoo. The New Actress Award went to young star KIM Sae-ron, who starred as a psychologically disturbed child in July JUNG’s A Girl at My Door.
On top of the Best Actress title, Han Gong-ju brought director LEE Su-jin the New Director award, while A Hard Day also took another trophy by being awarded for Best Screenplay for director and writer KIM Seong-hun.
On top of IM Si-wan, three more actors were noticed for their popularity. The Chungjungwon Popular Star Award takes votes from netizens online and went to SONG Seung-hun for Obsessed, KIM Woo-bin for Friend: The Great Legacy and SHIN Se-kyung for Tazza: The Hidden Card.
Other awards included Best Cinematography by CHOI Chan-min and YU Yeong-jong and Best Soundtrack for CHO Young-wook, both for KUNDO: Age of the Rampant, Best Art Direction went to LEE Ha-joon for Haemoo, the Editing Award went to KIM Chang-ju for A Hard Day and the Best Technical Award was given to KANG Jong-ik for The Pirates.
