- by CINE21 / Jan 19, 2024
The Bequeathed, A new series by Director Yeon Sang-ho’s crew, best known for the film Train to Busan and Netflix Series Hellbound, will be released on January 19 in selected regions, including North America and South Korea.
The Bequeathed is about a woman who inherits her family's land left to her after the death of her uncle, whom she had forgotten even existed. As a series of ominous events unfold, secrets are revealed. It is based on the webtoon of the same name, which was posted on the Kakao Page in Korea last November. The webtoon gained immense popularity, accumulating over 1 million views because of the fact director Yeon Sang-ho himself participated in it.
Min Hong-Nam, who has previously worked as an assistant director for Yeon Sang-ho in films such as Train to Busan, Psychokinesis, and Peninsula, is making his directorial debut with this series, while Yeon Sang-ho contributed to the screenplay and production. Actor Kim Hyun-joo, one of the most important actors in Yeon Sang-ho's cinematic universe with starring roles in Hellbound and Jung-E, will play an important role this time around. Meanwhile, actor Ryu Kyung-soo, known for his impressive performance as Priest Yu-Ji in Hellbound, will appear as the half-brother of the protagonist, adding to the tension in the film.
The Bequeathed explores the unique Korean family relationship through the mystery and occult genres. It offers an indigenous atmosphere based on key questions on how to deconstruct the multi-layered aspects of family relationships. At the press conference held on January 12th, director Min Hong-Nam expressed confidence that this series will be the most Korean and realistic mystery thriller. Director Na Hong-jin's The Wailing has already earned international popularity for its Korean folk horror genre, so it will be interesting to see if Yeon Sang-ho crew’s The Bequeathed can follow in its footsteps.
