Prison Drama Leads EFM Slate for Korean Distributor
Going into the European Film Market,
Showbox has sealed several deals on its upcoming thriller
The Prison. The debut film by
NA Hyun stars
KIM Rae-won as an ex-cop who winds up in jail only to find that an inmate played by
HAN Suk-kyu runs a major crime syndicate from inside.
Originally launched at AFM last November, the film has gone to Well Go USA for North America, JBG Pictures for Australia, New Zealand and the UK, Lemon Tree for China, Viva Communication for the Philippines and Movie Cloud for Taiwan. Showbox held a market screening for The Prison on Saturday during EFM.
These include the election drama
The Mayor from
Moby Dick (2011) director
PARK In-jae, starring
CHOI Min-shik (
Old Boy, 2003) as the mayor of Seoul seeking a third term in office. The film is due out in the second quarter of 2017.
Also out in the next quarter will be
RV: Resurrected Victims, the new film from
Friend (2001) director
KWAK Kyung-taek. The supernatural thriller features KIM Rae-won of
The Prison as a prosecutor looking for his mother’s killer only to be suddenly attacked by his dead mother.
Further down the line, Showbox will release the 1980s period drama
A Taxi Driver at some point in the summer. The new film from
Secret Reunion (2010) director
JANG Hun features
SONG Kang-ho playing the eponymous character driving around a German journalist played by Thomas Kretschmann who covers the Gwangju Democratization Movement.
