  • Japanese MISS GRANNY Remake Scheduled for April
  • by Pierce Conran /  Feb 24, 2016
  • 4th International Version of Hit CJ Comedy

Ayashii Kanojyo, a Japanese version of South Korean comedy hit Miss Granny has set its sights on an April 1st release date in Japan. CJ Entertainment’s Miss Granny was originally released in 2014, becoming the biggest Korean Lunar New Year film of that year, attracting 8.66 million viewers total (USD 50.88 million).

Following two very popular remakes in China and Vietnam, many are curious to see if CJ can strike gold again with their ‘One Source Multi Territory’ strategy, whereby an original story is adapted for several markets, in Japan.

The story concerns a 70-year-old woman who magically transforms into her 20-year-old self one day and begins an unlikely career as a singer. Japanese actresses Mikako TABE and Mitsuko BAISHO feature in the roles originally played by SHIM Eun-kyoung and NA Moon-hee, while The Apology King (2013) filmmaker Nobuo MIZUTO directed the film. CJ co-financed the film with Nippon Television Network Corporation and Shochiku while C&I Entertainment served as the producer.

Released in early 2015, the Chinese version 20, Once Again! grossed USD 59 million, becoming the highest-grossing China-Korea co-production. Currently on release, the Vietnamese version Sweet 20 recently became the most successful Vietnamese film in history. It has grossed USD 4.76 million as of February 17th, eclipsing former champ Let Hoi Decide, another local production by CJ Entertainment.

Following Ayashii Kanojyo’s release in April, Thai and Indonesian versions of Miss Granny are expected to bow later this year.
