  • KOFA Teams with Columbia University to Preserve Korean War Film Collection
  • by Pierce Conran /  Apr 03, 2013
  • Center for Korean History at Korea University Also on Hand to Assist

The C.V. Starr East Asian Library, part of New York’s Columbia University, is teaming with the Korean Film Archive and the Center for Korean History at Korea University for a project that will make digital duplicate copies of the Theodore Richard Conant Film Collection.

This collection dates from 2008 and covers a wide array of material, from the Korean War and the history of Korean films to social life and living conditions during the 1950s. It is named after filmmaker and former UN official Richard CONANT.

“The films depict images of Korea that are very different from those we would see in contemporary Korea,” said LEE Byung-hoon, Director of the Korean Film Archive. “When young Koreans today see the films they are likely to imagine a world unlike that of the Korea with which they are familiar. The images in the Conant films are thus a valuable resource.”

Primarily designed to improve access to materials related to the Korean War, all the librarie’s duplicates will be made available to the public.
