PARK Won-sun, mayor of Seoul, promises to support his film shooting
PARK Won-sun, the mayor of Seoul, suggested to ZHANG Yimou, the famed Chinese filmmaker, to make films in Seoul and he promised his full support for shooting. PARK met ZHANG at his office in city hall in October. “Since you are here in Seoul, I want to tell you that I would appreciate it if you can contribute to cultural and artistic exchange between our two countries.” said PARK, “We can provide you with accomodations and equipment for filmmaking, so please come to Seoul to make films.”
He then added, “ZHANG's films have in-depth artistic value, so it will be an honor for the city if he makes films here and the promotional effects will be worth more than the cost.” ZHANG gave him a positive answer saying, “As you promised to support me, I’ll make sure to come back for shooting.”
ZHANG expressed his impressions of Korean film saying, “I know the viewers of
Masquerade outnumbered 10 million. I cannot even imagine that a third or a quarter of the whole Chinese population would watch a film. I think the support from the Korean government for the film industry is great.”
Dankook University, where ZHANG has been registered as a chair-professor since 2009, decided to grant him the degree of honorary Ph.D in literature. A representative from the school said, “ZHANG has established a unique world of works by cinematizing oriental philosophy and Asian thoughts as a world class film artist. In accreditation of his devotion to the development of world culture and art, we decided to grant this degree.”
