Jeonju festival announces lineup 

The 11^th edition of the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF), the nation’s second-largest film fest, is to run April 29 – May 7, opening with Should’ve Kissed, the feature debut by PARK Jin-oh.  A total of 209 films from 49 countries will screen, of which 131 are features. 

The opening film, about an aspiring actor’s encounter with a despondent actress, is set in New York.  Director PARK, who has won acclaim for his Sundance-selected short films, is the younger brother of noted auteur PARK Jin-pyo (You Are My Sunshine).

A number of Korean features will make their world premiere at JIFF including KIM Sung-ho's She Came From, YOON Tae-shik's Themselves, LEE Sam-chil's Metamorphosis and KIM Ki-hoon's The Boy From Ipanema. A total of 8 features will compete in the Korean Feature Competition section.

This year’s Jeonju Digital Project travels to the Americas with Canada’s Denis Cote, U.S. director James Benning, and Argentina’s Matias Pineiro presenting their 30-minute shorts funded entirely by JIFF. 

Special focus programs this year include retrospectives on Korean documentary director KIM Dong-won, Portugal’s Pedro Costa, Hungarian master Miklos Jancso and German director Romualt Karmakar.  Famed Korean director BONG Joon-ho (Mother) will give a Master Class. 

The closing film is to be Mexico’s To the Sea by director Pedro Gonzales-Rubio.  JIFF’s Project Market, created to discover and support independent films, takes place May 1 – 2, with industry screenings running until May 6.  Jeonju is the capital city of North Jeolla Province, about 2.5 hours south of Seoul.  The festival website can be found at http://eng.jiff.or.kr/
