  • KOFIC to Promote International Standard for Registration of Korean Filmmakers
  • by Christopher Weatherspoon /  Feb 06, 2018
  • New Data System Will Help Local Filmmakers Enter International Market

Those who have been confused and frustrated in the past by the countless romanized variations of the names of Korean filmmakers will be very happy very soon.

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) announced on January 26 that it would diligently work to promote the registration of international standard names of Korean filmmakers. This is due to the development of a system that links the International Standard Audiovisual Data Number (ISAN) with the International Standard Name Identifiers (ISNI) in accordance with a 2016 business agreement made with the National Library of Korea.

With the introduction of the system, if Korean filmmakers have their information registered in the ISNI system, they will be able to accurately prove their career experience, making it easier for them to enter the international film market.

ISAN is an international standard for audiovisual materials such as short films, feature films and movie trailers. KOFIC has been appointed as a registrar by the international ISAN headquarters and has been operating ISAN Korea since 2015.

ISNI is an international standard that is designed to match creators to the works they have created, via the names of individuals or organizations. It covers all areas of content production and includes performing arts, literature, academic texts, music, fine art, film and broadcasting. Korea’s National Library has been in place since 2016 and as of now, over 100,000 creators have been granted as ISNI.

Due to the ISAN-ISNI connection, moviegoers registered in ISAN Korea are automatically assigned an ISNI number. This year, it will be limited to directors and actors but will gradually expand to include other filmmaking roles.
