A few decades ago, Korean kids used to fight over this issue: “Who would win if Mazinger Z and Grandizer fight?” Oh yes, it was a simple life back then. Things are more complicated for kids today. They have grown up watching the
X-men series featuring more than 10 superheroes, and to make things even more confusing, the
Avengers series has been added, illustrating a team of superheroes.
It would be impossible to see the real fight of superheroes, but we can estimate their box office battle performance. So far, the winner is the Avengers series, featuring a group of superheroes including Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America, which reminds of an old Korean proverb that “even a sheet of paper feels lighter when you give a hand.” The Avengers: Age of Ultron has become the 2nd winner of the all time Korean box office for foreign films, with 10.4 million viewers.
Among the individual players, as opposed to a team, the winners are Iron Man and Captain America. Iron Man 3 scored 9 million admissions, and Captain America: Civil War, still in the theater, has attracted 8.66 million viewers as of June 4th, in just 5 weeks since release. Superman and Batman, traditional superheroes, do not even have a chance to fight for the throne, although Batman did get 6.4 million admissions with The Dark Night Rises.
The superheroes in the X-men series, a group of mutated creatures, are reliable players although they never had a record breakthrough. X-men: Days of Future Past did well with 4.31 million viewers and this year, X-men: Apocalypse, released on May 25th, is doing great with 2.26 million admissions just in 10 days after release.
In tight spandex costume, these superheroes are fighting hard in this hot weather. Good luck to everyone who is fighting to save the world and themselves!
