  • Frontiers of Series Movies in Korea

My New Sassy Girl comes back in fifteen years after My Sassy Girl (2001). Gyeon-woo (CHA Tae-hyun)’s postscript will be finally known, who let his predestined love (Gianna JUN) leave.

Compared to Hollywood, it was somewhat difficult to see series movies in Korea, because it was rare to plan a film franchise with a long-term view. Therefore Two Cops series by KANG Woo-suk was notable. The series, which is about a pair of senior and junior detectives with contradictory characters, produced three films with different actors since 1993.

Whispering Corridors series starting from 1998 was one of a kind at home as well as abroad, because none of characters, actors and directors was repeated. The only thing in common is their concept as the horror movie set in a girls’ high school. Another one is that the series has always selected rookie directors and actors. Young directors including KIM Tae-yong, MIN Kyu-dong, PARK Ki-hyung and CHOI Equan made their debut through the series.

Now, there are more series movies in local theaters. Examples are Marrying the Mafia series about a gangster family’s noisy story and My Boss, My Hero series about gangs who build up their academic background at schools. Two Cops director KANG Woo-suk directed Public Enemy in 2002 and worked out well-made series again. Unconventional and arbitrary detective KANG Chul-joong (SUL Kyung-gu, who is a prosecutor in the second film, Another Public Enemy) is its main character.

When a movie is over, we used to wonder its characters would live happily ever after. Did Gyeon-woo meet her again or find a new love? Does KANG Chul-joong still take a nap in the office? So, it is always good to meet again those personas in a sequel of the films that we loved.
