  • The Box-office Prowess of RYU Seung-ryong
  • by HWANG Hee-yun /  Feb 19, 2019
  • RYU Seung-ryong, the “blue-chip” Korean actor

Extreme Job has already sold 14,536,378 tickets in 27 days of release, beating Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) to become the second-best performance for a Korean film ever. This film crushed with ease legendary records that had long been considered unbreakable, demonstrating once more the bankability of RYU Seung-ryong. The leading character actor in Korea industriously pumped out the biggest successes in Korean films from 2011 to 2013. He has proved his star power portraying diverse characters, in the war films The Front Line (2011) and War of the Arrows (2011), but also the melodramatic protagonist of All About My Wife (2012) and even the role of a heart-warming physically challenged person in Miracle in Cell No.7 (2013). Nevertheless, the fact is that RYU Seung-ryong’s box-office appeal faltered in recent years. The Target (2014), in which he played a man on the run after being falsely accused of murder, put up a good fight with 2,841,884 spectators, but the much-expected Psychokinesis (2018) and Seven Years of Night (2018) successively disappointed with meager ticket sales of under 1 million. With Extreme Job, however, RYU Seung-ryong proves that he is still the safest bet in Korean cinema. Now, the two most-watched Korean film movies ever feature RYU Seung-ryong, and the actor is present in four films of the top 10. RYU Seung-ryong is also the actor who appeared in the most movies that hit the 10-million admissions mark.
