  • Box Office Results of Best Picture Oscar Winners in Recent 5 Years

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, is a worthy label; the winners have been commercially successful all over the world. Movie fans consider the Academy Award winners as outstanding works that are worth watching, and so many of them decide to add them to their must-see list. From old classics like The Last Emperor (1988) and Titanic (1998) to relatively recent movies such as Slumdog Millionaire (2009) or The King’s Speech (2011), Oscar winners have had good runs. However, the Oscars seem to be losing their influence. In Korea, few winning films have crossed the 1 million-admission mark in the last 5 years. Many Best Picture winners have underperformed; 12 Years a Slave (86th) sold 498,976 tickets, while Birdman (87th) welcomed 206,241 viewers, Spotlight (88th) 300,620 viewers, and Moonlight (89th) 178,251 viewers. This year’s Best Picture winner The Shape of Water did not fare much better. This fantasy drama recorded slightly over 500,000 moviegoers. However, it would be difficult to assert that the Oscars have lost their prestige. Unlike the Bests Picture recipients, winners of other categories were successful in Korea. Among them, La La Land (89th), for which Emma Stone received Best Actress, and The Revenant (88th), which earned Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar for Best Actor, thrived at the domestic box office.
