The two new local blockbusters, The King and Confidential Assignment competed at the Lunar New Year’s box office this year. The King topped at first after both were released on January 18th, but Confidential Assignment overtook The King on January 26th just before the Lunar New Year’s holiday.Which films have contended for victory at the Lunar New year’s theaters that the biggest battles have broken out every year? The winner of 2016 was a crime comedy, A Violent Prosecutor drawing 2.33 million moviegoers during the holiday weekend. It beat DreamWorks’ animation Kung Fu Panda 3 by a wide margin, which was released a week earlier and brought 550,000 viewers during the same period.Local and foreign films also met at the same time in 2015, and the victory went to Korean one. Period adventure sequel Detective K: Secret of the Lost Island with 1.2 million admissions defeated British spy comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service with 900,000 spectators over the Lunar New Year’s weekend. In 2014, an animated feature came in. Comedy drama Miss Granny and Disney’s Frozen clashed. The winner was Miss Granny with 1.77 million filmgoers drawing out a close victory over Frozen with 1.65 million viewers.Two domestic movies heated up the Lunar New Year season’s box office in 2013. Prison-set comedy Miracle in Cell No.7 and spy thriller The Berlin File attracted 1.3 million and 1.15 million filmgoers respectively. Of course the former came in the first place. Meanwhile, a new aspect occurred at the Lunar New Year’s box office in 2012. Family comedy Dancing Queen and political thriller Unbowed contended for the first place at the Lunar New Year’s holiday when usually blockbusters compete. Dancing Queen topped with 510,000 viewers over Unbowed with 390,000 admissions, but Unbowed did better than expected.
