Changing of the Number of Viewers of Korean Films in 2016
Less than one month is left for the 2016. For eleven months from January this year, the 52.5% market share for Korean films has been winning with slim margins against 47.5% market share for foreign movies.
Local films started weaker with a 45.2% market share than foreign films in January, but rebounded strongly with a 62.3% market share while criminal comedy
A Violent Prosecutor did well in February including the Lunar New Year holidays. Domestic films trailed again foreign ones in terms of market share, however they brought the initiative in July when zombie horror
TRAIN TO BUSAN was released. Korean movies did better during three months of the peak season from July and August to September including Chuseok holidays, but lose their shares to foreign films once more in October.
Therefore, the form of the curve in 2016’s Korean film market will be determined by box office receipts of local disaster blockbuster
Pandora which was released on December 7th and Hollywood blockbuster
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which is due out on December 28th.
