  • Successful Local Indies of 2016 at the Box Office

It has been hot summer. TRAIN TO BUSAN surpassed 10 million viewers, while Tunnel and Operation Chromite ranked fourth and fifth respectively at the whole 2016 box office. These days, The Age of Shadows climbed in third place recording over 7 million audiences. However, smaller movies are doing well. Three quarters through the year later, domestic top independent and art films at the diversity box office are as below.

CHOI Jeong-yeol’s One Way Trip is at number one. Starring boy group EXO member SUHO and actor RYU Jun-yeol, the film drew 188,000 moviegoers thanks to young actors. Second best is an animated feature Seoul Station, which can be a prequel of the biggest hit TRAIN TO BUSAN. The animation by director YEON Sang-ho brought 147,000 admissions.

Meanwhile, Worst Woman by renowned director KIM Jong-kwan in the indie world came in third with 80,000 spectators and YOON Ga-eun’s feature debut The World of Us came in fourth place with 46,000 viewers. The World of Us attracted movie fans’ attention when it was invited to the Generations section at the Berlin International Film Festival this year.

Lastly, in the fifth place is The Queen of Crime luring 44,000 filmgoers. It is the third project of KwangHwaMoon Cinema, a group of young indie filmmakers and attained fame after producing The King of Jokgu (2014).
