The Top 10 Animated Films of the Summer Movie Season, Another Battlefield
After racking up USD 800 million at the global box office, the power of the Minions and Gru was also proven in domestic theaters. The final winner of the animation war of this summer vacation was Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 3, far outdistancing its rivals. Cars 3 returned to complete its series after six years but had to settle for second place.
Reliable franchises still did well this summer. Five of the top ten were series sequels and number one through four were all American and Japanese series. Therefore, it is impressive that Son of Bigfoot, a Belgian-French animated film, was dominant among big brand names. By nationality, four American animated films, three Japanese, one Russian (Fantastic Journey to Oz), one Luxemburg-Belgian-German-Norwegian (Richard the Stork) and one Belgian-French rounded out the top ten list.
Just missing the list were the Chinese film Boonie Bears: Homeward Journey, which attracted 25,903 moviegoers, and the latest entry in the British children’s Thomas the Tank Engine series, Thomas & Friends: Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure which brought 23,395 viewers. Both were released preemptively just before the summer vacation season but did not make it to the top ten.
