  • The Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) was launched in 2008 as the world’s first genre film industry program. Over the past 14 years, the program has selected 329 projects, of which 64 have gone on to completion, and it has established itself as an Asian hub for supporting and cultivating filmmakers.

The 2021 NAFF project market - which, with 40 selections from 28 countries, will be presenting more projects than ever before - will be holding business meetings online this year. Project Spotlight has chosen to introduce projects from Korea this year, and post-production support will be given through the Work in Progress program, which was launched last year in collaboration with the Seoul Business Agency (SBA). Furthermore, the NAFF project market will continue to work in cooperation with Northern Europe and South America through the Nordic Genre Invasion and Blood Window.

Outstanding projects that have undergone preliminary and final rounds of judging will receive cash awards and post-production support via C-47 and Singapore’s Mocha Chai Laboratories.

    It Project

Launched in 2008, the NAFF It Project is the world’s first-ever project market to focus exclusively on genre films. By discovering projects and providing production support, it creates new trends within the film industry, while also acting as an Asian film industry hub, where film professionals and individuals in the film industry can interact. In order to keep pace with the rapidly changing digital media environment and the impact that the rise of OTT services has had on the film and TV content ecosystem, the NAFF It Project accepted submissions of series projects this year. Directors and producers of the selected projects get to have one-on-one business meetings with film industry professionals from all around the world, which could lead to a co-production, investment, and distribution opportunities. In addition, a jury that consists of domestic and overseas film industry professionals conducts individual meetings with projects in order to choose the outstanding projects that will receive cash awards and post-production support awards. The NAFF It Project welcomes fresh and novel ideas and projects, and it will strive to become a solid support system for the dreams and passions of filmmakers.

    NAFF Project Meeting
The directors and producers of projects selected by the ‘NAFF Project Market’ will have contact-free business meetings with domestic and international investors, producers, distributors, and various people from film organizations in 30 minute blocks. The online business meetings will be held via the business meeting platform b.square, which has a simple procedure and provides the optimal user environment. B.square is an online meeting platform used by distinguished overseas film festivals such as Marché du Film, Sundance, etc. and provides not only convenience for the B.I.G guests and project participants but also an efficient operation and monitoring system. If registered B.I.G guests and project participants input the meeting times they are each available and request a meeting in advance, a 30 minute online meeting is automatically scheduled. The ‘NAFF Project Market’ will provide more meeting opportunities to participants by maximizing the advantages of being in a contact-free environment by overcoming the limits of space and time through digital space.

Also,, which allows for interaction in digital space, has been chosen as the platform for a separate event to provide participants with opportunities to strengthen their networks through more casual interaction separate from the official business meetings. is a game-like virtual reality space where people can communicate through their own personal avatars. Through an online environment and using a webcam and a PC, participants will be able to feel a sense of closeness that exceeds face-to-face encounters.

    Fantastic Film School

As a genre film production education and networking program for emerging Asian filmmakers, NAFF Fantastic Film School has provided a practical-based curriculum since its inception. Over the past 13 years, Fantastic Film School has produced 264 filmmakers. Taking on the role of dean this year is Hanmac Culture Group CEO Jonathan KIM, who has produced/executive produced more than 30 films, including Piano Man (1996), A Promise (1998), To Catch a Virgin Ghost (2004), Monopoly (2006), and Jang-Gae: The Foreigner (2020). Also in store are a master class by the brilliant Tony KAYE, a small-scale mentoring program to facilitate a close exchange between lecturers and participants, and pitching and networking programs. Fantastic Film School’s curriculum focuses on the cultivation of a sustainable film industry; it covers fundamental aspects of film production, such as screenwriting coaching and scene analysis, as well as hot issues within the film industry, including strategies for getting into film festivals and film distribution/screening alternatives. It also creates synergy by offering a variety of networking opportunities, thereby promoting the formation of global networks between participants. Fantastic Film School creates high-quality programs to foster up-and-coming Asian filmmakers by assessing the rapidly-changing trends in the film industry. The participants’ passion for learning motivates the veterans on site, and their know-how gifts the participants with valuable insight. The meticulous guidance of last year’s lecturers and the enthusiasm of the participants offset the pandemic’s impact and allowed the program to end in success. By gleaning the lessons from our experiences last year, we will maximize the safety and convenience of the online program and launch a talent cultivation platform for this year’s 100 participants (35 enrollees + 65 auditing students).
