DEMON SLAYER Rises to First in Week 5
Despite an old holdover climbing to first place, business rose almost 15% over the weekend, during which a varied lineup of five titles each secured over 13% of sales. Overall, 430,000 tickets were sold, 24% of which for domestic films.
During its fifth weekend of release (or sixth if we include a pre-release weekend of nation-wide previews), Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train rose 30% and clinched first place for the first time in its run. The hit Japanese animation welcomed 83,400 viewers (USD 747,000), pushing its total to 893,000 admissions (USD 7.61 million) to date.
Local action-comedy MISSION: POSSIBLE was down 36% in its sophomore frame, during which it welcomed 83,000 spectators (USD 685,000). The KIM Young-kwang and LEE Sun-bin vehicle has filled 331,000 seats (USD 2.66 million) after 12 days in theaters.
Six weeks into its run, the Pixar hit Soul continues to be a threat. The animation was down just 23% as it sold 78,000 tickets (USD 665,000), pushing its total to 1.88 million entries (USD 15.48 million) so far.
Opening in Korea before any other global market, the Hollywood sci-fi film Chaos Walking with Tom HOLLAND and Daisy RIDLEY kicked off its run in fourth place with 65,000 tickets (USD 504,000) sold over the weekend and 100,000 sales (USD 733,000) over its first five days.
Tom and Jerry, a new live-action and animation hybrid film based on the beloved toon characters, entered the chart at number five with 58,000 tickets (USD 467,000) sold over the weekend and 91,000 admissions (USD 683,000) clinched since its Wednesday launch.
Debuting in sixth place was the local crime film Go Back with PARK Ha-seon. The indie film welcomed 10,500 viewers (USD 73,000) over the weekend with 21,000 admissions (USD 131,000) banked so far.
With Demon Slayer and Soul still major threats, this week the charts will welcome the acclaimed Korean-American drama Minari and the Disney animation Raya and the Last Dragon.
