KANG Yun-sung’s Latest Combines Gangster Thriller and Election Drama
Following his smash hit debut THE OUTLAWS (2017), director KANG Yun-sung will be back in theaters next month with his follow-up work, the thriller Long Live the King. Featuring KIM Rae-won in the lead, the film, which combines elements of the gangster thriller and the election drama, will be distributed in Korea by Megabox Plus M in June.
KIM plays Se-chool, a gangster pining after human rights lawyer So-hyun (WON Jin-ah), who keeps fending off his advances. He decides to go straight and after accidentally becoming a hero when he rescues someone from a bus crash, he decides to use his newfound fame to run for the National Assembly. Before long, a political opponent (CHOI Gwi-hwa) teams up with his former gangster rival (JIN Seon-kyu) to take him down.
Crime drama THE OUTLAWS, with Don LEE (aka MA Dong-seok) and YOON Kye-sang, was the unexpected hit of the Chuseok holiday in 2017, drawing 6.88 million viewers (USD 48.16 million). KANG’s new work is based on a popular webtoon of the same name by Beodeunamoosoop.
