Auteur’s 23rd Work Reunites Him with KIM Min-hee for the 6th Time
Hong Sangsoo will debut his latest film, and second from this year, at the 71st edition of the Locarno International Film Festival next month.
Hotel by the River is the auteur’s 23rd film and sixth collaboration with actress
KIM Min-hee.
Hotel by the River will be one among 15 titles competing for the festival’s top Golden Leopard Prize and is the only Korean film among the Swiss festival’s lineup. The black and white film depicts a middle-aged man who meets his child and two young women beside a river.
Earlier this year, Hong presented the film
Grass, also shot in black and white and featuring KIM, in the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival. The director has been particularly busy these past few years as these two titles follow three that debuted at the Berlin and Cannes Film Festivals last year, all starring KIM -
On the Beach at Night Alone (2017),
The Day After (2017) and
Claire’s Camera.
Hong has a very strong track record in Locarno, where his works have been screened many times. In 2013, he earned the Best Director Award for
Our Sunhi, while he picked up the Golden Leopard for
Right Now, Wrong Then in 2015. Hong’s first time working with KIM,
Right Now, Wrong Then also won the Best Actor Award for co-star
JUNG Jae-young.
The Locarno International Film Festival will be held from August 1 to 11.
